For the last twelve years, the Mombasa project, headed up by Sean & Joyce McIntyre, has been making a difference in one of the poorest areas of Mombasa, Kenya. Their work involves preaching teaching and caring as they seek to meet the spiritual and practical needs of the local people.
Some of the activities that we’re involved in are:
Teaching & Discipleship
Sean and Joyce are passionate about seeing revival and transformation. Through New Life Church, which they planted in 2002, they are seeking to provide an alternative to the syncretism (the mixing of traditional beliefs with Christian teaching) and false teaching (such as the prosperity Gospel) which has become so prevalent in Africa.
The church provides discipleship and solid biblical teaching in a caring community of believers.
Empowering Women
The Women of Bokole are hard working and committed to their families. However, they often lack the resources needed to take care of their children and a disproportionate number of them suffer from difficult and often abusive marriages. Together with Sean & Joyce we have started a project called Women of Hope.
Working through the church, Women of Hope gives women an interest free micro loan (usually £80 -£100). This loan provides them with the capital to start a small business which will support their families. By loaning, rather than giving the money, we encourage financial responsibility and the same money can be used to help more than one person. Participants can even receive another loan to expand their business even further.
Sponsoring children
In the next twelve months we plan to open a playgroup enabling children in Bokole to have several hours of fun and stimulating activities and providing some basic food to supplement their otherwise meagre diet.
In 2016 we will be launching a child sponsorship programme both for the children in the playgroup and also to contribute towards primary and secondary education for children in low income families.
